290 Domestic & International Corporations Joined, GLORIA Has Delivered 2018 Fruitful ResultsSince September 2017, the Global Research & Industry Alliance (GLORIA) has built the team of academia-industry collaboration, releasing progressive research energy for the industry, encouraging universities to form alliances with domestic and international leading corporations. GLORIA has become the best platform for cooperation between Taiwan's industry, academia, and global enterprises. It has created an innovative ecosystem that allows Taiwan universities’ research to discover, develop, promote, and commercialize science and technology. Starting from the beginning of the project to the end of December 2018, GLORIA has formed an alliance of 18 universities, such as National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chengchi University, National Central University, National Sun Yat-sen University, National Chung Hsing University, National Yang-Ming University, Taipei Medical University, China Medical University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Taipei University of Technology, Chung Yuan Christian University, Feng Chia University, National Taiwan Ocean University, National Formosa University, Far East University. The overall outcome that GLORIA has achieved for the past year: 290 domestic and international enterprise members joined; membership income approached nearly 100 million NTD; more than 6.3 billion NTD investment brought in from the industry; 2,552 talents cultivated, and 787 employed persons measured. In order to connect international corporations resources, GLORIA has built strategic cooperative networks across Europe, the United States, and Asia, including National Chung Hsing University’ branch offices in North America and Vietnam; National Taiwan University of Science and Technology’s residential industrial liaison experts in Israel and Japan. Moreover, many domestic and foreign corporations such as IBM, Microsoft, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Thomson Reuters, Kneron, Qisda, ASE Group, Quanta Computer, and other international companies have joined to work with the alliances of GLORIA. The purpose is to explore new business opportunities for cooperation, connect global networks, and access to business information and resources. GLORIA has developed an effective model for bilateral collaborations between Taiwan and global corporations to catch up to the world trend. The establishment of GLORIA not only deeply explores the research and development energy of the universities, but also continuously condensing Taiwan industry-university cooperation strengths. For example, GLORIA National Hsing Hua University has involved in professor's technical assistance to upgrade products on waste disposal procedure to save 30 million NTD for SEIEM, an electronic company. And it also brought over 35 million NTD profits additionally to further university-industry collaboration. In integrating cross research unit to attract international investment, GLORIA National Chengchi University generated leads from Taiwan Financial Services Roundtable to collaborate with IBM, REFINITIV, Microsoft, Industrial Technology Research Institute to establish 6 laboratories for assisting with commercialization of FinTech innovations. As in consultancy and advisory services on early stage businesses for expanding new markets, GLORIA National Chiao Tung University provided customized services and research resources for the industry, and also attracted highly potential startups with cutting-edge technology in AI, AR/VR, IoT to join the alliance. GLORIA has played a key role as a business liaison to help connect large corporations and accelerate the growth of startup companies. To summarize the outcome for the past year, GLORIA has established a leading indicator as in introducing industrial resources to the academia, bringing advanced research to the industry, and cultivating talents for the industry. “We look forward to GLORIA playing a role as a compass for Qisda’s navigation, providing guidance for the alliance to explore innovative research results, developing a place where excellent research can be applied into industry, and keeping the interaction between academia and industry active with foresight." Welcome Jourdeness Joins NCHU GLORIAOn 18 th , Jan., 2019, Jourdeness Group was signed the membership contract with National Chung Hsing University GLORIA Office. GLORIA international member, ETOS AGRO Group, was as the witness on that day. And, the contract was signed by the Vice President, Mr. Jenn-Wen Huang, and the chief executive officer of Jourdeness, Ms. Jia-Chi Chen. Apart from the ETOS AGRO people, the attendant guests were GLORIA CEO, Dr. John Hsu, GLORIA COO, Mr. YK Lin, and several department director and professors. And, the attendees from Jourdeness were the chief administrative officer, Ms. Carrie Chen, and several senior managers. Jourdeness was the first cosmetology service industry listed in Taiwan. Apart from Taiwan, their business territory has broadened to China, Malaysia, Japan, America, Canada and so on. The CEO, Ms. Jia-Chi Chen, also announced that Jourdeness has invested 1.8 billion to create a “Jourdeness Biotechnology Farm” in the Da-Poo Park of Chiayi city (嘉義大埔美園區). And, it will start the construction from May, 2019, and the predict time of finish construction will be at around the 4 th season of 2021. This Taiwan biggest cosmetic tourism factory, Tzuo- Mei Building (佐美館), provides the production line with GMP standard. It not only could expand production capability, but also provides the service of tourism industry. Moreover, they’ve also prepared to toward the international market. Furthermore, Jourdeness expects to have more connection and cooperation with NCHU distinguished professors in R&D. To today’s big event, the NCHU Vice President, Mr. Jenn-Wen Huang, mentioned that it is really happy to welcome Jourdeness joins NCHU GLORIA. In the future we expect to have more industrial-university cooperation with Jourdeness as the bridge to connect campus technology and R&D with industries. NCKU Inks Deal with Mitacs on Cooperation of Industry-Academic Collaboration Internship ProgramNational Cheng Kung University (NCKU) signed a memorandum of understanding on Jan. 24 with Mitacs, a Canada-based not-for-profit, touting their determination to promote academic and university-industry cooperation between the two countries. The partnership targeted their graduate and doctoral students as well as postdoctoral fellows, providing the opportunity of four- to six-month internships. Under the MOU, students are entitled to a scholarship of 15,000 Canadian dollars to conduct research internships with industry partners in Taiwan for Accelerate program. 6,000 Canadian dollars is provided under the Mitacs’Globalink program for students willing to conduct research projects in the opposite country at a partner university. Both party can send 50 participants each way to for these two programs. NCKU President Jenny Su witnessed the signing ceremony and praised it as a milestone in cooperation as Mitacs has long been partnering with 60 institutes and over 6,000 industry partners in Canada while the collaboration not only can strengthen research capability but also enhance industry-academic development to establish and support high-growth enterprises. “The program links the R&D to the domestic and international innovation and talent resources which empower the enterprises to form the strategy for upcoming challenges and turning a new chapter in Taiwan’s economic development. Such cooperation cannot be achieved without the assistance of Taipei Economic & Cultural Office (TECO) along with the help of the Science and Technology Division, TECO in Canada.”, Chen said. Matyas noted that Mitacs is delighted to be signing this very important partnership agreement with GLORIA NCKU. “We see huge benefits for connecting our innovation ecosystems and collaborating on research activities as well as supporting brain circulation in both directions to develop the next generation of innovators. We look forward to a strong and lasting partnership.” Established in 1999, Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that fosters growth and innovation for business and post-secondary institutions. Working with over 65 universities, thousands of companies in Canada and abroad for 20 years. Mitacs builds partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada and abroad for industrial research placements for graduate student and Postdoctoral fellows. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Jesse Chen, CEO of GLORIA NCKU, and Lissa Matyas, Mitacs’ Vice President of International Partnerships. NCHU Professor Yuh-ming Huang as Agricultural Consultant to Indonesia International Member, ETOS AGRONCHU GLORIA aims to integrate the campus energy and facilities in R&D. This cluster effect of the alliance not only connects the energy of the industrial and research institutions in the central region, but also promote Taiwan’s achievements in agricultural technology, smart machinery, and biomedical materials and so on. In short, it acts as an accelerator to export technology, capabilities, and products to the world for the development of international companies. Under this circumstances, NCHU GLORIA does really care every one member and its demand. However, the demand from every member is quite different, and thus, the membership service would be customized. ETOS AGRO Industrial Park Banyuwangi (EAIPB) is in an industrial park in Kabupaten Banyuwangi of Indonesian East Java province. It is predicted that Indonesia population would reach around 300 million. However, as Indonesian has highly relied on import foods as the domestic low food quality and bad agriculture production. EAIPB expects to have food sovereignty as the focus of agricultural development. It endeavors to development as a Agro-Industrial Park based on smart farming and precise farm to improve the management process between the upstream and downstream business relationship. Thus, ETOS AGRO group joined NCHU GLORIA was mainly hope NCHU professors could as their know-how based as consultant for more complete plan and development on this 1200 hectares’ park. And, NCHU Professor Yuh-ming Huang was as the representative and consultant flied to Indonesia International Member, ETOS AGRO from 24 th -27 th , Jan., 2019. At this period, he went with group people to diagnose the soil and crops, such as pepper, corn, papaya, dragon fruit and watermelon. What’s more, professor Huang also taught and review the problems from soil, seedling, crops, fertilizer, and irrigation with the employees. Such a series of courses gets highly praise with local employees. They requested to prolonged the course time and even look forward to have next course. Such successful! This membership consultant course was very successful. Thus, NCHU GLORIA really appreciate professor Huang fly to ETOS AGRO Industrial Park Banyuwangi (EAIPB). He expressed the highly willingness to process local course and training to ETOS AGRO employee.
