Announcement The Ministry of Science & Technology Announces the 2020 Open Call for the Academia-Industry Research Alliance (REAL) Project, Awarding a Monthly Grant of NT$40,000 & above for PhD Students
To enhance the international leading position and competitiveness of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) has been promoting the “Academia-Industry Research Alliance Project” (also known as the REAL project) since 2017. It was piloted in the semiconductor field and was divided into three groups, namely IC design, wafer manufacturing, and IC packaging and testing. The purpose of the REAL project is to connect the top energy of the academic-industry in the domestic semiconductor industry, lays out the ground work for forward-looking technology research and high-level R&D talent development, and implements the concept of “Small Country, Smart Strategy” for the development of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry to seize the opportunities.
 
The REAL project has cumulatively subsidized a total of 56 forward-looking technical research projects, with a subsidy exceeding NT$116 million, supporting eight universities that includes National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Cheng Kung University, as well as more than 30 corporations such as MediaTek, TSMC, UMC, Etron Technology, BioPro Scientific, and start-up companies. Meanwhile, the industry has also invested a total of NT$160 million and cumulatively cultivated 124 PhD students.
 
To encourage outstanding PhD students to participate in the project, each of them will be awarded a basic grant of at least NT$40,000 per month. They can further cooperate with MOST’s pilot plan to encourage enterprises to invest in the PhD cultivation program and each person will be awarded a grant of more than NT$60,000 per month.
 
The online applications of 2020 REAL project starts from August 26, 2019 (Monday). As the application organization has to consolidate all application in one book and submits them to MOST before October 28 (Monday), please send your applications as early as possible!
