To strengthen resources integration for cross-sector projects and enhance interaction of academia-industry collaboration, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) held on May 10 in Kaohsiung the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes x GLORIA Exchange Conference” by combining the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project” and the “Global Research and Industry Alliance (GLORIA)”. Interaction was heated up at the conference by nearly 100 participants, including 11 Institutes and 18 GLORIA universities attending the conference. Apart from presenting their capability, participating institutes exchanged opinions and discussed with GLORIA CEOs and representatives.

According to Section Chief Hua-wei Hsu of the Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs, MOST, the conference aims to match research institutes with universities for the former to help academia with the commercialization and technology transfer of research outcomes or to develop startups. GLORIA aims to match enterprise needs with the research potential of universities, promoting academia-industry collaboration at home and abroad, matching talents with enterprises, integrating bilateral project resources, expanding the effectiveness and creating a new win-win situation for academia-industry collaboration.

At the conference, Ing-Kuen Lai, co-principal investigator of the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project” and leader of the “Academia-Industry Matching Team”, expressed that the conference can further strengthen mutual cooperation, and the team will start a series of visits to provide universities with more straightforward services. In addition, Pauline Fu, chief of the project office of Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes, gave a detailed presentation on the cooperation mechanism between the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project” and GLORIA. By setting up a responsible window with each university, mining and guiding potential technologies, and organizing activities and platforms, the office will combine the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project” with GLORIA’s energy to create new momentum for academia-industry collaboration.

University representatives also enquired about the guidance mechanism under the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project”. Section Chief Hsu enthusiastically encouraged assistance for universities to commodify research outcomes through cross-institute collaboration when explaining the multi-enterprise guidance. As past examples of cross-institute guidance with excellent outcomes are found in the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project”, Section Chief Hsu hopes that cross- institute and cross-sector collaboration can help accomplish more brilliant examples to increase the value of university research outcomes.

Apart from mining potential technologies, the “Academia-Industry Collaboration by Research Institutes Project” has established the “Academia-Industry Matching Team” to provide consulting services for academia-industry collaboration and the industrialization of research outcomes. Through collaboration with industrial associations, the team organizes academia-industry matching conferences this year to provide more business opportunities for universities to match their research outcomes with enterprises.
