  • National Central University Turns Over a New Page in Global Industry-Academia Collaboration with Bionefit: Beauty with a Bold Attitude
Bionefit Research, a biomedical|cosmetic company, became a member of the NCU GLORIA (National Central University, Global Research and Industry Alliance) in September of 2018. On December 7th, they visited Professor Eric Huang’s laboratory at the Department of Biomedical Sciences & Engineering, National Central University, to confirm technology transfer-related details, followed by an introduction to Global Engage, a globally renowned life science event-planning company, in hopes of obtaining the right to host the 6th Microbiome R&D and Business Collaboration Congress: Asia in 2020 – turning over a new page in global industry-academia collaboration.

Chairman of Bionefit Research, Wilson Cheung and CEO of NCU GLORIA, James Chu, took a photo after signing the NDA.

Eric Huang, Chair Professor of Department of Biomedical Sciences & Engineering, National Central University, is a leading scholar in the research of dermatology and microbiology, and well-known in the global academic community. In recent years, with support from Taiwan’s MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) Germination Program, he has successfully established the first worldwide “Skin Probiotics Bank.” Furthermore, he initiated Microbiome Editing research with Taiwan MOST’s FITI (From IP to IPO) project, and delivered excellent results and technology breakthrough that continue to transform ordinary people’s knowledge in biology and medical science.

Professor Huang believes that the development in the medical application of probiotics will be the next big wave in the school of thoughts. Although there are many probiotics banks for gastrointestinal applications all over the world, the one being built by the team is specifically for skin probiotics. So far, there’s data collection of over 1,000 bacteria strains in the bank, where 100 of them have been identified as probiotics. In the meantime, the data bank is progressively expanding and growing in numbers.

Bionefit Research, a leading biotech research company with headquarters in San Diego, California. Bionefit is dedicated to creating cosmetic and health-care products that are tailored for individual needs. While traditional biotech companies emphasize the natural or botanic features in their products, Bionefit broke through the stereotypes and focused on building a unique brand. They conducted market research and discovered the future possibilities and business opportunities in probiotics – then, they found Professor Huang. In September of 2018, they became a member of the NCU GLORIA.

Aside from establishing the skin probiotics database and carrying out microbiome editing work, and as an outstanding researcher in the area of electrodermal signals, Prof. Huang’s current challenge is to integrate dermal signal research with mobile devices. Many corporations already laid their eyes on this very specialized technology.

“Skin probiotics bank provides big data, and to transfer dermal signals to the cloud for relevant applications, or combining it with artificial intelligence, will create value to the data transfer and monitoring techniques,” Prof. Huang remarks, “The possibilities are endless.”

Today’s research is constantly revolving and shedding new light on biotech/biomed and medical facility, alongside commercial development and market needs. It is with high hopes that problematic skin conditions like acne, wrinkles, age spots, and atopic dermatitis may be resolved holistically with technological advances in skin probiotics database, cloud monitoring, microbiome editing and probiotics transactions. Bionefit Research, together with NCU Gloria and Prof. Huang’s research team, is expecting to generate new sparks and produce cutting-edge remedy in skin health and beauty.
