  • The New Technology of Coral Breeding Propagation Has Achieved a Successful Fund Raising From an Investor in Silicon Valley
One of the successful cases from a well-known program which is hosted by Taiwan Minister of Science and Technology is revealed.  A new marine science research team under the instruction of Professor Lee-Shing Fang has successfully developed a technology for coral extracts and used in biotech industry.  The team also includes Professor Zhi-Hong Wen from National Sun-Yatsen University and Professor Ping-Jyun Sung from National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium as well as the students they guide.  The technology brought the attention of investors and has come out an exclusive licensed start-up company with successful fund raising in Nov.15th.
With a aim to “Create new industry, Rebuild fish village and National Land by breeding and propagation local species corals”, the team is also connected to different resources supported by southern Taiwan GLORIA
Without wild collection, the technology is mainly focus on breeding and propagation of specific species of local corals and then extract the nature elements to be used in bio products.  The research team has approved the good result for the skin of burn injury、diabetes and Atopic dermatitis through animal experiment and patented the results.  In addition to be used in the new drug for above-mentioned disease, the discovery can also be used in the field of cosmetic and skin care.
With the spirit of start-up teammate from teachers-students, Professor Wen, one of the inventor, said he expects the university can be the most powerful backup and he encourages the young researchers can bring all their innovative ideas to be entrepreneurs.  Under the support by Economic Development Bureau of Kaohsiung City Hall and Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission, the team has got the investment from Randy Chang, President of Wesoar International Corporation and Chief Secretary of North America Taiwanese Engineering & Science Association (NATEA-SV).  He participates the investment as the angel investor and forms the start-up company, ForCean Inc., with the team.
Professor. Ying-Yao Cheng, President of National Sun Yat-sen University(NSYSU), mentioned that this is truly a role-model of “Dare to Dream the future”which is what he keeps promoting in the campus. NSYSU will always encourage the collaboration between academic and industry, educating talented people and bring the innovation and valuable assistance for industry. “The young generation is always with great ideas. They have the chance to change the world as long as the opportunities provided”President Cheng said.

Chang of global research & industry alliance (NSYSU), and Director William Cheng-Yu Ma of technology transfer center, office of global industry-academe collaboration and advancement (NSYSU).

Coral used to be ornamental purpose in the past. Our research team from NSYSU found the coral extract can improve chronic wounds healing such as burns and diabetes wounds by animal experiments in biomedical research. It showed great potential for biomedical use in the future.

We can use the the technology of NSYSU to provide precious bioactive compounds without collecting in the ocean and environmental destruction.
