A New Generation of Brainwave Sensor, A Modern Medical Weapon.
After more than ten years of research, Professor Kuo-Kai Shyu and Professor Po-Lei Lee from the Department of Electrical Engineering of National Central University developed the seventh-generation brainwave sensor. Overcomes the traditional limitations of size, complex wiring, and expensive construction. The appearance is only the size of a cigarette case. It is technic and aesthetic. It has passed ISO 10993 biocompatibility and IEC 60601 electrical safety testing which is qualified for medical grade. It can be used in the field of clinical medicine and cooperate with medical institutions such as Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Department of Neurosurgery, Taipei Veterans General Hospital Department of Neurology and Taoyuan General Hospital Department of Physical medicine and rehabilitation, which can help patients with ALS, spinal cord injured, stroke, dementia and depression.
Professor Kuo-Kai Shyu shared that the key is the development of high-sensitivity brainwave dry electrodes, which no longer need to use traditional conductive adhesives, which are more in line with the needs of the human body. Professor Po-Lei Lee also gave full play to the spirit of experimenters, contributed his own brain to experiments by accepted electrical discharge stimulation. Due to the cost of the biological laboratory is too expensive, the research team has faced various challenge of funding and failure. In the end, not only successfully obtained the certification, the "Brainwave Control Functional Electrical Stimulation Assistive System" was also shortlisted for The List of Nominees of the 2021 Future Tech Awards.
Anti-epidemic robot, Contactless Future
Professor Kuo-Kai Shyu said, "Brainwaves look complicated, but they actually have physical meaning." Through algorithmic identification, some interfering noise can be eliminated, and the signals sent by humans can be more accurately represented, and the mission must be fulfilled. The anti-epidemic robot combines virtual reality and inertial posture sensors. Through the brainwave control device, it can call the anti-epidemic robot to pick up the delivery meal, avoiding human contact; in the future, you can also call a virtual robot to attend meetings, creating unlimited possibilities!
In addition, in response to the needs of anti-epidemic, brainwave applications will also help future learning. Assistant Professor Lung-Hao Lee, who specializes in natural language processing, said that when students wear a new generation of brainwave sensors, teachers can grasp the cognitive and emotional information of the students and understand whether the students are attentive or not.
