Chung Yuan Christian University
Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) has executed Global Research & Industry Alliance program from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) since 2018 and has based itself at the Innovation Pilot Center for Theory in Practice. CYCU has not only integrated resources between the local industries and research institutions but has also promoted global industry-academia cooperation, which yields outstanding results. Global Research & Industry Alliance signing ceremony & the 1st anniversary of the Innovation Pilot Center for Theory in Practice took place on June 30th, and circles of the government, the industries, and the university rubbed shoulders with each other at the venue. The Deputy Director-General of MOST Tu, Chun-Yi attended the ceremony and stated she was pleased to see that CYCU has been cooperating with international companies. She believed Taiwan’s academic research results not only brings about support for domestic industries but also gives a positive influence upon the international community, which serves as a great way for Taiwan to get connected with the world.

Global Research & Industry Alliance CYCU focuses mainly on both “Membrane Technology” and “Smart Manufacturing”. It creates an industry-university-institute platform for multi-cooperation channels across different colleges and universities, industries, and nations. Also, it helps facilitate business transformation, technology upgrading, talent cultivation, and connection with foreign countries. Global Research & Industry Alliance CYCU has accumulated five international members and twenty-five domestic members. There are 197 cases of industry-academia cooperation projects, and the total amount of project fee is over 140 million TWD, the total amount of patent license fee, over 37 million TWD.

CYCU president Chang, Kuang-Cheng stated that the benefit of Global Research & Industry Alliance program CYCU has executed over the past two years is far beyond the expectation. Despite the worsening global economy impacted by the pandemic, CYCU does not halt industry-academia cooperation. On top of that, CYCU even achieves greater results. The Deputy Mayor of Taoyuan city Kao, An-Pang remarked that CYCU is one of the most popular universities among companies in Taiwan, and the graduates have always behaved well in different sectors. Taoyuan City is promoting “Chung Yuan Start-Up”, and the government anticipates that CYCU will establish a closer connection with the office of Asia Silicon Valley Development Agency (ASVDA) through CYCU's strong research capabilities. Such a connection creates an additional effect on Taoyuan gateway city and betters the promotion of ASVDA.

The three partners attending the signing ceremony were as follows: (1) Gudeng Precision Industrial Co., Ltd., specializing in front-end semiconductor manufacturing process (2) Reliance International Development Co., Ltd., committed to the research and development of new energy equipment (3) Veolia Environnement S.A., a French leading company achieving a better and more sustainable future. The chairman of Gudeng Precision Chiu, Ming-Chien, the general manager of Reliance Lin, Chin-Hui, and the director of Asia business development of Veolia Chi, Chih-Sheng attended the signing ceremony on behalf of their companies and recognized CYCU’s effort on plastic injection molding, circular economy, and energy management. They believed that the exceptional CYCU’s R&D team and research capabilities shall enhance industry competitiveness and get connected with the global community.

CYCU suggested that Gudeng Precision has won both the “National Quality Award” and the “National Award of Outstanding SMEs”. The company is the leading role that provides high-level reticle carrier solutions, which is the only Taiwan supplier recognized by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC). The director of R&D Center for Smart Manufacturing, CYCU Chen, Shia-Chung led a panel of experts and helped the company to facilitate technological transformation in semiconductor carrier and intelligent management in the era of Industry 4.0. The industry-academia cooperation between Reliance and CYCU was led by a panel from the dean of the college of engineering Chung, Tsair-Wang. The panel helped the company build a field in Pingtung for biomass electricity generation. Veolia, along with CYCU, is aimed at optimizing energy management for energy saving and carbon emission reduction on campus. They hope to build a platform for industry-academia cooperation and talent cultivation and to impose a common vision for the circular economy.

CYCU president pointed out that the school was awarded “excellent university for industry-academia cooperation” prize for six consecutive years and has so far been earning the prize for twelve times. This year, the school once again won the prize and was the first place among “public and private university” category. Whether to promote industry-academia cooperation or to cultivate talents, CYCU observes its educational philosophy of “the wise and prudent utilization of professional knowledge of the sciences and the humanities”. With the core value of “holistic education”, the school is believed to reach the goal of “piloting future generations with theory in practice” through industry-academia cooperation and to make a promising future with circles of the government, the industries, and the university.
