The “GLORIA” which consists of five schools in Kaohsiung city and Pingtung County led by the NSYSU, and the “Green Energy & Environment Research Labs in the ITRI” conducted technical and information exchanges on February 20. The conference was chaired by Chief Academic Consultant Chen Ying-Chung from the NSYSU, while Director Li Chih-Tsung, Teacher Tsai Ming-Li, Teacher Chen Chun-Hu and students from the Department of Chemistry introduced the core technology and research conducted in the laboratory. Green Energy & Environment Research Labs was led by Deputy Director Yang Ping-Chun, and attended by four senior researchers, including Dr. Wang Cheng-Han, Manager Li Chun-Han, Manager Chiu Sheng-Cheng, and Manager Chang Ying-Hsi. During the meeting, preliminary technical content exchanges and discussions were held, and the relevant arrangements were made for three teachers and researchers from the Green Energy & Environment Research Labs in the ITRI to conduct individual visits subsequently.
This time, the GLORIA and the Green Energy & Environment Research Labs in the ITRI mainly focus on three topics: flow battery research, biomass energy research, and hydrogen energy research. Director Li Chih-Tsung, Teacher Tsai Ming-Li, and Teacher Chen Chun-Hu from the NSYSU respectively share related technologies and research results in these three fields.
Emphasizing cross-field research and application, Director Li Chih-Tsung synthesizes materials with special functionality through molecular design based on organic chemistry and high polymer chemistry, and then uses various material analysis techniques to study its characteristics. Currently, Director Li Chih-Tsung's laboratory focuses on three major areas, including energy storage batteries (flow batteries), new functional nano- and micro-structured polymer materials, and the use of chemical methods to control the stacking and generation of photonic crystals.
Teacher Chen Chun-Hu's research focuses on the synthesis of graphene nanocomposites and metal oxide nanomaterials and their applications in clean energy, water decomposition, smart devices, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and biosensing. Teacher Chen Chun-Hu also focuses on identifying potential mechanisms and interactions that exist on these composites. In the field of hydrogen energy research, hydrogen and oxygen produced by water decomposition reactions are clean energy. However, the energy required for the water decomposition reaction is often greater than the energy that can be generated by clean energy, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the main cause of excessive energy loss, so a catalyst is required to promote the reaction. Teacher Chen's laboratory uses a simple oxidation-reduction method and a catalyst for synthesizing cobalt-manganese hydroxide thin films by heating. This method can quickly coat large areas and successfully coat on the surface of complex objects.
Teacher Tsai Ming-Li focuses on the theoretical calculations combining organic synthesis, inorganic synthesis, and spectral analysis to explore the interrelationships between the coordination environment / structure, reactivity, and electronic configuration of transition metal complexes. Teacher Tsai Ming-Li also focuses on systematic design of molecular catalysts based on the said theoretical calculations as an attempt to solve the problem of sustainable energy. As oil depletion is predictable, Teacher Tsai hopes to develop rich natural resources as raw materials for liquid oil products and high value-added chemicals to reduce dependence on oil.
How to design a high-efficiency catalyst to convert natural gas methane and biomass lignin at normal temperatures and pressures is an important direction in Teacher Tsai's research.
