  • TMU GLORIA held a forum on AI inviting experts from industry & schools to share their opinions



TMU GLORIA held a forum “Opening a new page in AI in medical: challenges of application” on 23th December, 2019. TMU invited experts from industry and schools to share their opinions.
 
Jackson Wu, vice president of Taipei Medical University, stated in the opening speech that TMU has a long history of AI development. TMU has founded Graduate Institute of Biomedical Informatics 21 years ago. TMU meets the needs of industry training professionals in big data and artificial intelligence. This forum will also invite experts from different aspects to share the development of AI in medical imaging.

The development of Taiwan's medical soft power and ICT hard power is obvious to the world. Tsai Yuan-hung, the director of project division of Taiwan AI Academy, also shared the opportunities and challenges of Taiwan's smart medical industry. He said that the progress of science and technology has brought about tremendous changes and promoted the entry of industry. The 4.0 era, the most important of which is the change brought by artificial intelligence. At present, countries around the world also regard AI as a national strategy, which has also led to the rise of medical 4.0.
 
Even though AI in medicine has sprung up, the current challenges of introducing medical AI include inadequate determination to change culture, data problems, lack of technical talent, unclear goals / effects, and insufficient resources.
He also suggested that AI in medicine development must follow five steps, including confirmation topics, data collection and pre-processing, modeling training, patent application and clinical verification. He also said that if there is a new AI model, people can continue to work on the two steps of data collection, pre-processing, and modeling training.

Ray Chu, general manager of Synergytek Consultancy, viewed AI in medicine from a patent perspective. He said that the global medical image market has an output value of 39.8 billion US dollars, but by 2025, the output value can reach 55.5 billion US dollars. AI in medical image will increase from the current 500 million output value to 2.5 billion US dollars by 2024.

Though the output value is not very high, from the perspective of cost savings, according to Accenture statistics, it is possible to save $ 150 billion in costs through AI technology. These emerging technologies also protect products through patent applications, so we can also understand the current development trend of AI in medicine through patent applications.

Jack Li, Dean of college of medical science and techonology of TMU, shared the academic application of AI to commercialization, including three stages, the first is to predict health signs in the preventive care stage, the major diseases in the acute care stage, and the long-term care stage to predict disability worsening.
He also mentioned the characteristics of premature medical treatment. Because early detection reduces the cost of treatment, the prognosis is also good. Therefore, accurate, immediate, and individualized diagnosis through AI can prevent diseases before they occur.

Doctor Li also established DermAI LTD. with his own expertise to use AI to take care of people's skin health. He said that uploading photos on LINE APP and answering a few simple questions, MoleMe can judge the risk of moles. Now MoleMe has analyzed 25,000 photos with an accuracy over 90%.

Chris Kuo,director of Wistron Medical Technology Corporation shared smart medical application cases from industry. He said that in recent years, the aging population and shortage of medical manpower made smart healthcare have developed. The hospitals had great interest in smart hospitals, but due to insufficient budget, it has only optimized for only a few technologies.

Chris Kuo said, Wistron is the earliest telecommunications company to transform and deploy the medical industry in Taiwan. Now Wistron also focuses on four smart medical fields, including IVD, medical image, smart mobility aids, and AI in medicine/big data.
