National Yang-Ming University
Through combining 14 innovative research projects from National Yang-Ming University, the Innovation and Incubation manufacturers, and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, the “Matching Forum for Taipei Veterans General Hospital and National Yang-Ming University – Research Presentation” hosted by the Global Research & Industry Alliance (GLORIA), National Yang-Ming University on the 12th of November, 2019 has successfully displayed the top-notch research and development technologies and fruitful findings from the industry-academia-medical field. Through this opportunity of communication between academia, research, and industry, GLORIA hopes to promote promising business cooperation, bringing new values to medical care in Taiwan.
Six outstanding technologies from National Yang-Ming University were presented at the forum to fully display the university research team’s fruitful research findings.
First of all, Prof. Muh-Hwa Yang’s team at the Institute of Clinical Medicine took the lead in presenting “Compounds and ways of fighting against drug resistance in cancer,” which is applied for the treatment of head and neck cancer. The team has licensed the patent to a peptide drug discovery company in Taiwan, in the hope of benefiting more patients in the future.
Associate Prof. Yu-Chun Chen of the Faculty of Medicine shared his “AIGIA for MED” system with the audience. Associate Prof. Yu-Chun Chen uses mobile phone coupled with camera device to complete drug identification using drug image database and the drug identification API, providing ways to use drugs safely. He hopes to solve everyday needs of middle-aged and aged patients in the clinical care environment.

Associate Professor Jin-Wu Tsai’s research team of the Institute of Brain Science has developed a new genetic screening method for malformations of cortical development (MCDs) and found the potential MCDs gene leading to the disease. These research findings have shown that the new way can mimic the pathogenesis of MCDs, and identify various new genes and pathways involved in cortex growth, creating new opportunities for MCDs treatment.
Professor Yu-Hsin Lin of the Faculty of Pharmacy has made nanocarriers with high biocompatibility using the polymer technique. Animal studies have proved that the nanocarrier can prevent oral drugs from being damaged by gastric acid. The nanocarrier can also carry both water-soluble and lipid-soluble drugs, achieving synergy effects and better curative effects.

“Nanocarriers in human disease treatment.”
Associate Prof. How-Foo Chen of the Institute of Biophotonics has tested drug resistance of bacteria based on the theory of surface plasmon resonance. The testing time is significantly shortened, as cell proliferation is not required throughout the process. Reports will be ready within only 2 hours.
The problem deaf patients found most hard to overcome when using assistive devices is noise elimination. To solve this problem, Assistant Prof. Ying-Hui Lai’s research team of the Department of BioMedical Engineering dramatically increased the listening effectiveness of assistive devices using the context aware-based noise elimination method. Their research has found a new direction for the signal processing of the four hundred million hearing-impaired people’s artificial assistive devices globally. Besides, Taipei Veterans General Hospital and the Innovation and Incubation manufacturers have also presented several technologies, showing a successful industry-academia collaboration.
To make research findings useful, National Yang-Ming University GLORIA has been making industry and academia collaborating successfully, promoting research and development continuously, hoping domestic enterprises to bring out the best in them, and promoting the development of the biomedical industry in Taiwan.
