With the finance support from Most AI Biomedical Research Center, an assembled crossover team by the department of Computer science and engineering and department of Oceanography of NSYSU, applied AI technology to the traditional aquaculture industry. The system mainly enhances the recognizing ability of underwater photography. To feed prawns with pure seawater, it can not only increase the breeding rate from 40% to 70%, but also the prawn weight by 30% higher and save electrical energy by 30%.

This AI feeding system has already been tested successfully. It features using visible light and infrared technology to overcome different kinds of light, watercolor and turbidity, so that it can automatically recognize the amounts, figures, vitality and feeding efficiency of the prawns. Through big data analysis, the information can assist aquaculture industry from Taiwan to global market in decision-making management to lower the costs, reduce risk and raise production ability.

The team said the greatest challenge is to overcome the turbidity of culture pool, which is the key to increase the breeding rate of prawns. If the pool is muddy, fishermen can’t entirely rely on visual observation to tell whether prawns are healthy or not. Once the prawns are over-fed, the water usually become polluted due to the excessive feces and residual baits, and it will decrease the breeding rate as well. So first, this innovative AI system helps to inform the feeding proper timing. Secondly, it can also save electricity by 30% and reduce labor cost. On top of applying AI to aquaculture industry, the team also integrates the experience in oceanography research and underwater monitoring technology to improve hydrologic cycle system and discharging pollutants system, so that the prawns can live in a better and healthier environment.

Currently, the team is dedicated to cooperating with more aquafarms to test the AI system. They indicated that the team is making effort to develop AI chips modules to applying to calculating device. This technology can enhance system efficiency, save electricity and protect intellectual property rights. The ultimate goal to connect the research with the industry and promote AI resolution to the unmet need market of Biomedical industry.

NSYSU-GLORIA also engages in close collaboration with the team, endeavoring to test the AI system in normal aquafarms, assisting the traditional aquaculture industry in transformation. It aims to transform traditional aquaculture industry into “Artificial Intelligence” age.
