  • The Global Research & Industry Alliance, National Yang-Ming University, Reveals Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, Raising New Opportunities in Digital Medicine through Interdisciplinary Cooperation

The Global Research & Industry Alliance, National Yang-Ming University, has hosted the world-class Industry-Academia Matching Forum under the theme “Digital Medicine” on the 14th of May. Hundreds of people were attracted to this grand event. The first “Digital Medicine Alliance” ever established in Taiwan was launched during the meeting. National Yang-Ming University, Institute of Data Science and Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, and Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, combine forces in this alliance to prevent and treat diseases through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The alliance initially hopes to provide precision prevention and treatment strategies for people with strokes and take this opportunity to open a new door for the innovative applications of digital medicine using AI techniques.

President H. S. Kuo, National Yang-Ming University gave a welcome speech and remarked that National Yang-Ming University has committed to integrating healthcare information for years, and was the first university to establish an institute for health informatics, which later transformed into Institute of Bioinformatics. The results obtained from the Digital Medicine Alliance’s task force will contribute to medical institutions. President Kuo also expects to build more partnerships through cooperation in the future.

Division Chief Hua Wei Hsu, Department of Academia-Industry Collaboration and Science Park Affairs, declared that National Yang-Ming University is an expert in digital medicine, and is supported by the Global Research & Industry Alliance (GLORIA), Ministry of Science and Technology. Ministry of Science and Technology expects GLORIA to help in academic,talent, and technique development to increase industry profitability.

Monica Bey, Chief Executive Officer of National Yang-Ming University Business Center of Industry-Academia Liaison/GLORIA, made a welcome speech before the panel discussion began. She mentioned that National Yang-Ming University has applied itself to integrating all the on-campus AI resources for this event, which took as long as six months to plan. Chief Executive Officer Monica Bey also introduced Vice-President Jen-Chuen Hsieh, the leader of the Integrative Human Brain Science and Neurotechnology Laboratory, National Yang-Ming University. Vice-President Hsieh indicated, “The introduction of digital technology, including AI, the Internet IoT)), big data computer science, and biomedical electronics to the medical field leads to the creation of digital medicine. Hopefully, new applications will be created.”

The first half of the panel discussion, with “Digital Medical Ecosystem: Innovation and Transformation” as its theme, was co-hosted by Vice-President Jen-Chuen Hsieh and Chief Executive Officer Monica Bey. Several representatives from the Digital Medicine Alliance shared and analyzed the innovative technology applications in their fields of research. The emphasis of the panel discussion was on discussing why the world’s top technology companies at present (Microsoft, Google, IBM) exited the market for AI applications in healthcare after gaining results, and whether start-up companies and digital research centers stand a chance to defeat these companies.

Kazem Kazempour, President of the internationally renowned contract research organization (CRO) Amarex Clinical Research, was sincerely invited to give a keynote speech during the second half the panel discussion, which explored the topic - the Development of Medical Big Data: Applications and Challenges. Feng-ming Yeh, Chief Secretary of National Health Insurance Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Dr. Huey-Herng Sheu, Dean of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Han Zhang Wu, General Manager of ASUS Life Corporation, and Yi-Shao Liu, Vice General Manager of Helios Bioelectronics Inc. were also invited to share their experiences of digital health development. The final part of the panel discussion was hosted by Vice-President Muh-Hwa Yang, National Yang-Ming University.

Through this event, GLORIA, National Yang-Ming University, expects to bring industrial demand into universities through collaboration and channel the on-campus research and development outcomes into international markets in this wave of artificial intelligence. The goal is to encourage the creation of innovative applications and interdisciplinary cooperation, forging a brand-new era of digital medicines together with the collaborators!
