On March 29th, the President of Feng Chia University (FCU), Prof. Bing-Jean LEE, led the FCU Global Research & Industry Alliance (GLORIA) to participate in the Hannover Messe 2019. In the exhibition, the FCU GLORIA showed three advanced technologies which developed from industry-FCU cooperated projects. The technologies included ‘Cyber-physics Application for Leather Defect Inspection’, ‘Thin Film Heating Element’ and ‘Stretchable Thin Film Strain Gauge’. This Hannover trip promoted the prospective technologies, and attracted international partners to collaborate with FCU.
‘Cyber-physics Application for Leather Defect Inspection’ applies Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) to inspect leather surface defects. By using real-time analysis, a robot arm can immediately identify defects. As compared with manual inspection, automated inspection eliminates human error to ensure quality of leather production.
Global market for household electric heating elements and personal wearable electric heating tools grows rapidly at 15% annually. ‘Thin Film Heating Element’ was developed to tackle the huge business opportunity. The thin film heating element is flexible, thin, lightweight and low cost. This is better than conventional technologies such as metal heating wire, ceramic heater, halogen lamp, rubber heating mat, and carbon fiber sheet. The thin film heater is able to attach on various irregular objects. Therefore, it can be used in wearable devices. In addition, this technology can also be used for transparent component and lens, for example, defogging system of side view mirror of vehicle.
‘Stretchable Thin Film Strain Gauge’ can be widely used in prosthetic, body monitoring and robot. For body monitoring, the strain gauge can be used as epidermal heartbeat and blood pressure sensing. Also, stretchable strain gauge can be put on prosthetic to provide sense to disabled people. If the strain gauge is used on robot, it can be used as humidity, and force sensor. For example, the robot can quickly detect slight vibration and fluctuation from the surrounding.
In addition to the Hannover Messe, FCU took this opportunity to visit many academic and research institutions, such as the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and Fraunhofer Society. FAU and FCU discussed the cooperation in footwear automatic manufacturing. These visits are expected to promote technical exchange and cooperation between Germany and Taiwan. Also, this trip was able to promote technologies, R&D and business between Taiwan and the rest of the world.
