From January 8th to January 11th 2019, the world's largest consumer electronics show CES (Consumer Electronics Show) was opened to the public in the LVCC South Plaza of Las Vegas, USA. Under the companionship of GLORIA NCKU, the NCKU technical team headed for and took part in CES 2019 to display multiple NCKU smart technological applications in the NCKU Thematic Pavilion, including Brain Mind Welfare: a sleep enhancement solution with AI Neural Training, iHousekeeper, smart mosquito lamp, smart body temperature monitoring wristband, AuDis system, Guard Patch - an artificial intelligence system & platform with wearable diseases diagnosis, 2D to 3D conversion software & VR middleware, and basketball tactic training VR system, etc, thereby introducing NCKU innovative technologies to the rest of the world.
Since insomnia is one of the main diseases of affluence in the modern society, many large manufacturers in CES this time have published their sleep aid devices. Professor Liang of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, NCKU, exhibited the BMW (Brain Mind Welfare) system that integrates wearable structural design, real-time brainwave signal analysis, wireless communication, and noise suppression technology, not only surpassing the sleep monitoring and assistive functions in any other existing products sold on the market but also improving sleep quality through neuro-feedback training in the long run. So far, the system has successfully attracted many vendors in CES negotiating for collaboration.
With the advent of population aging, long-term home care will soon become one of the most popular services with the highest demand in the future. By aiming at the silver-haired family and the diabetic patients as the main target groups, Distinguished Professor Jiang of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, NCKU, successfully developed an iHousekeeper robot that combines the AI perception and AI learning to record user habits in a precise way. In the future, the customized applications can be expanded to include children’s education, pet training, etc. to increase the business opportunities based on different customer groups.
Chairman Kao of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, NCKU, and Professor Ko of Department of Nursing, NCKU worked closely together to exhibit the smart mosquito lamp and the smart wristband on prevention and control of infectious diseases. The smart mosquito lamp not only catches mosquito like regular lamp does but also analyzes the mosquito it captures. Furthermore, it collects the data of captured mosquito and sends to cloud services in real-time to achieve the best anti-epidemic effect. The smart and cloud-based wristband is designed for proactive clinical applications. The body temperature and heart rate are the most important vital signs that generally considered essential to evaluate human health, and a continuous monitoring should be made to early identify the patients with risks for poor prognosis, so that cloud technology and Internet of Things are combined to achieve the purpose of epidemic prevention data integration.
In response to the needs of clinical physicians of National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Professor Lee of Department of Electrical Engineering, NCKU, developed a series of physiological signal measurement technologies including 24-hour clock heart rate monitoring clothes, smart stethoscope, epileptic brainwave monitoring, and reticular activating system. This way, wearable circuit design, wireless biomedical chips, biomedical sensor devices, IoT transmission, etc. are integrated to provide the most complete solution that crosses the two professional fields of electronic and medication.
By making a breakthrough in traditional 3D movies that heavily rely on a specific screen with a special device, Professor Yang of the Department of Electrical Engineering developed the first ultra-high-quality 3D and VR TV broadcasting system using centralized texture and depth packing technology so that both 2D and 3D TVs are able to receive 3D images with a wide variety of modes such as naked eye 3D, Red/Blue 3D, or polarized 3D available for selection. By combining the exhibits with VR games in the CES this time, the business opportunities, applications, and entertainments derived therefrom have caught attention from many manufacturers.
Professor Hu of the Department of Electrical Engineering of NCKU exhibited Basketball Tactic Training VR System that integrates virtual reality, computer graphics, multimedia systems, and other technologies so that the user can vividly experience how the tactics are executed by viewing from a specific player's viewing direction even without the presence of other teammates.
In the future, the focus of electronic products and smart technology development will not only be concentrated on the deepening of core AI technology but also taking into account software services and big data collection to build a cross-domain integration platform under cross-departmental and transnational cooperation. By providing education training and talent cultivation programs, GLORIA NCKU assists the modern industries and academic institutions to establish an industry-academia collaboration so that the application of smart technologies in the medical industry can be further expanded to enhance the economic value of modern technologies.
